Archie Simmonds the Border Reivers mechanic gets to work on Hugh McCaig’s Jaguar XK120.

Back in the late 1950s there was great rivalry between Ecurie Ecosse and Border Reivers, particularly when Jim Clark was racing the Reivers D-type Jaguar (See profile Jim Clark). However, recently, Border Reivers were able to help out Ecurie Ecosse.

Patron of Ecurie Ecosse , Hugh McCaig, drove to Duns in his ex-Bob Hamilton Jaguar XK120 cabriolet as the sun was shining and the car felt good. He met up with Scottish Motor Racing Club vice-President, Bernard Buss and they headed off for lunch. However the Jaguar started to give trouble and finally stopped not far from Chirnside. Bernard immediately telephoned Archie Simmonds formerly the chief mechanic for Border Reivers and asked for help. He arrived in his Land Rover with the Border Reivers badge on the side and repaired Hugh’s Jaguar on the spot.

Good to see that old rivals can still help each other.
